On July 15, Deputy Mayor Jamie McKeag-Reber and Councillor Sean Carnahan joined Calmar Crossing Inc. co-principals Rakesh Patel and Mahmood Shah, project investors and special guests for a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of construction on Phase 1 of a new 33,000 square foot commercial plaza, located on 5225 50 Avenue.

“The Calmar Crossing development is a prime example of how the Town is working to attract high-quality investment to strengthen our local economy and support job creation,” said McKeag-Reber. “We are focused on capitalizing on our prime location along Highway 39 to expand local retail opportunities and set Calmar up for sustainable, long-term success.”

The event began with a land acknowledgement and traditional ceremony to honour the longstanding presence, culture and stewardship of Indigenous peoples in the region. The developers also emphasized their commitment to respectful partnership and continued engagement with the local business community throughout the phased development process.

“We are deeply grateful to the Town of Calmar for their guidance, support and shared vision for sustainable growth,” said co principal Rakesh Patel. “Our goal is long-term, sustainable development that grows with the community. We also aim to create meaningful employment opportunities — around a hundred new jobs — by bringing top-tier facilities and services to Calmar.”

Calmar Crossing will be anchored by Shell and a global fast-food chain. It will also house several internationally renowned and popular food brands. Future phases will introduce opportunities for additional retail, medical, lifestyle and family-focused services.

Construction of the first two buildings within the new plaza (approximately 9,800 sq. ft. of retail space) will begin in late summer or early fall, with completion expected in July 2027, weather permitting.
