The first phase of engagement on community recreational priorities and the future of the aging Mike Karbonik Arena site ran from August 14-September 11, 2026. We received over 500 responses – 44% from local residents and 56% from surrounding areas, which is fantastic!

A big thank you to everyone who took the time to fill out the survey – we sincerely appreciate your valuable feedback.

Catalyst Communications supported this engagement process and presented the survey findings to Council on October 19, 2026. Key survey findings include:

  • Strong support for keeping ice in Calmar – 95% of the respondents said local access to ice is important; 92% say it should weigh in Council’s decision; 90% agree it is important to Calmar’s identity and community spirit.
  • Most respondents favour facility upgrades and modernization over facility removal or sale.
  • Those who filled out the survey want more than the ice, not instead of the ice – 93% want year-round space for multi-use groups.
  • 93% of respondents rate operating costs as important; however, the two lowest-cost options (demolish or divest) were the least supported.

Moving forward, respondents want Council to strongly consider:

  • Treating local ice as a baseline when comparing options.
  • The capital, operating and per household tax impact per shortlisted option.
  • Adding community space – dry-floor, walking or event spaces to fit an ice option.

Community feedback will be critical as Council moves through the next steps of this process over the coming months. Please stay tuned for more opportunities to have your say.
